The Nordic and Baltic Startup Powerhouse: Comparing Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania
The Nordic and Baltic Startup Powerhouse: Comparing Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania
Introduction
Northern Europe has quietly become one of the world’s most dynamic regions for entrepreneurship and innovation. Although the Nordic and Baltic countries together have a population of only around 35 million people, they have produced dozens of billion-dollar technology companies, attracted billions in venture capital, and built startup ecosystems that compete with much larger economies.
Alongside my work as a medical doctor, I have been fascinated by investing and business analysis since childhood. I have always been curious about why some companies become global success stories while others struggle to grow. Over the years, this curiosity evolved into a genuine passion for entrepreneurship and startup ecosystems.
I have followed the development of startups across Northern Europe particularly closely because the region combines world-class education, technological excellence, and societies that actively support innovation and entrepreneurship. My own entrepreneurial journey began when I founded WildAccess, fulfilling a long-held dream of building a company of my own.
In this article, I compare the startup ecosystems of the Nordic and Baltic countries and examine what makes each of them unique in producing innovative companies and global success stories.
